THE FIRST AERODYNAMIC JERSEY PROJECT: THE SPLIT SECOND

When Castelli designed the first aero jersey for road racing in 2006, everyone thought we were crazy. Back then, aerodynamics was reserved for time trial races. Performance clothing meant moisture management. You could win the Tour de France in a baggy jersey that was barely more sophisticated than a polyester t-shirt. Even our aero consultants expected marginal gains, which is why we called the jersey “Split Second.” Today, as then, we know that even modest gains can make a difference. In the end, those gains have been quite substantial, and we’ve completely revolutionized the look of the pro peloton. We’re now on the sixth major revision of our aero jersey, with each new generation getting more aerodynamic and better fitting. The Aero Race 6.0 benefits hugely from CFD analysis of drag, particularly in terms of fabric placement and seam positioning on the saddle. It also benefits from feedback from Team Sky riders, as our aim has been to make the jersey as comfortable as possible during their long training hours and during racing in all weather conditions.
